TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR, a super-telephoto zoom lens compatible with Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras.
The AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is a 2.5x super-telephoto zoom lens that supports the 200-500 mm*1 range of focal lengths with a maximum aperture of f/5.6. Adoption of ED glass elements achieves superior optical performance with which chromatic aberration is suppressed.
In addition, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) function that exhibits the highest level of camera shake compensation available with a NIKKOR lens—equivalent to a 4.5-stop*2 increase in shutter speed. It is also equipped with a SPORT VR mode, which enables effective photography of athletes and other subjects that move quickly and unpredictably. What's more, the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is equipped with an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism that enables stable exposure control with high-speed continuous shooting for comfortable hand-held shooting that captures the decisive moment as a wild bird flaps its wings, or of an airplane in flight.
This super-telephoto zoom lens brings distant subjects closer and makes them stand out from backgrounds with the shallow depth of field and large bokeh (pleasing blur characteristics) common to this type of lens. The AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is a super-telephoto zoom lens that allows anyone, from those new to super-telephoto photography to experienced photo enthusiasts, to easily enjoy sharp, blur-free rendering throughout the entire zoom range.

Nikon heeft tot veler verrassing een goedkoper alternatief in de markt gezet voor iedereen die met een Nikon body ook graag een 500mm-lens op zijn body wilt schroeven, maar die een 500mm f/4 lens (de introductieprijs van het nieuwste model kost je een kleine € 10.000,-) te duur vind. De geschiedenis heeft trouwens laten zien dat de nieuwprijs van dit soort objectieven nauwelijks daalt. Zo kost de oudere versie van de Nikon 500mm f/4 al jaren een kleine € 7.299,-.
Het goedkopere alternatief voor de 500mm f/4 is de Nikon 200–500mm f/5.6E AF-S VR ED. De prijs bij introductie in Nederland ligt rond de € 1.500,- (in de VS ligt deze rond de $ 1.300,-). Omdat de lens nog zo nieuw is, is er nog geen review beschikbaar, maar die zal de komende weken zeker beschikbaar komen.
Met een maximaal (en vast) diafragma van f/5.6 zou je er theoretisch nog een 1.4x teleconverter op moeten kunnen plaatsen en behoud je autofocus bij Nikon body's die tot f/8 automatisch scherp kunnen stellen. De lens moet dan wel goed presteren bij volledig geopend diafragma, want anders heb je er niet zoveel aan (oke, als je eenmaal hebt scherpgesteld, kun je altijd nog snel diafragmeren, maar pannen wordt in zo'n geval dan wat lastiger).
Deze lens is ideaal voor vogelaars en sportfotografen met een wat krapper budget en de lens is flink goedkoper dan de Nikon 80-400/4.5-5.6G AF-S VR II ED zoomlens die nu in Nederland zo'n € 2.200,- moet kosten.
De grootste concurrenten van deze lens zijn: de Nikon 80-400mm, de Sigma 50-500mm, de Sigma 150-500mm, de Sigma 150-600mm, de Tamron 150-600mm en de Tamron 200-500mm.
